The Carboy Cave has two large niches in the wall which, from the evidence of size might suggest they were used as storage for carboys of chemicals or acids. The debris found in this cave included straw which may have been used as packing around the carboys. To the west there a bricked up archway which would lead out into the Clayton’s Square to the rear of number 52. In the mid-nineteenth century this arch would have led into the cellar of the Edwin Clayton’s bakery which was situated in Clayton’s Square adjacent to the rear of 52 Bridlesmith Gate. The Carboy Cave may have belonged to the bakery rather than being part of number 52 Bridlesmith Gate as it is today. | ![]() |
