Wool Vault

As with many of the caves in this system, the Wool Vault would have originally been open to the air. There is evidence to suggest that this cave was used to store sheep skins prior to them being sold for tanning. The wool on the skins would have collected moisture from the air and so become heavier. As the skins were sold by weight, this would increase the skins value.
At some stage, a flight of brick steps was built between this cave and the Steps Cave which is located directly above. The bottom few steps can still be seen.On the opposite side of the cave to the steps there is what may be a coal bunker or something similar.
