The Truncated Cave

The Truncated Cave is part of a larger cave which extends under Bridlesmith Gate. The portion of the cave which is under the road has been bricked up and is not accessible. The cave contains an unusual two-level thrall. It has been speculated that this is designed to help people lift heavy sacks from the floor. The lower level of the thrall providing an initial resting place for the sack before it is raised to shoulder level.

Finds from this level of the cave system include a number of printers’ ink bottles and some painted signs which were obviously produced by Blakey Brothers. Other finds were some much-deteriorated button-up shoes, a brooch shaped like a strawberry and many bottles all dating to later than 1850.
