The Semi-Circular Cave

Opposite the Truncated Cave is a flight of steps hewn into rock. Over the years some of the steps have become worn and have been replaced with brick steps. The passage bends to the left and at this point there is a cross carved in the wall.
The meaning of the cross has been lost in the mists of time however there are a number of such crosses to be found in caves under Nottingham.
The cave itself is semi-circular in shape and has a low roof. The wall shows evidence of good, even pick marks. The walls also have carbon marks which could be from candles or rush lights. Around the walls there is a rock-cut thrall or bench. There is a large purple stain caused by printer’s ink – possibly evidence of a bad day at work for one of the employees of Blakey Brothers!
